"The discovery in the late 1800s of how to harness electrical energy through a circuit bore curious fruit in our uptight culture. A new vibrating machine could supposedly cure "hysteria," the ancient, inherited term for all manner of female ills. (Today, we’d call them depression and sexual repression/deprivation.) Sarah Ruhl’s 2009 comedy, directed with gentle wit by Kurt Beattie, pits the doctor’s simple on/off stimulation against the patient’s physiological complexities. "A 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony nominee for Best Play, Sarah Ruhl’s provocative, and at times, tender comedy is set in the 1880s — a time when doctors believed that "hysterical" women (and men) could be treated with vibrators, and electricity was a brand new technology. The play finds a Victorian-era doctor in New York championing the effects of this new electronic device, while in the adjoining room, the doctor’s wife is yearning for a different kind of intimacy. ACT has also teamed with the adult toy store Babeland to present a themed display in the lobby. The "Vintage Vibrator" collection features ten antique personal massagers and highlights their historical uses and development…" (Get your tickets now! via "In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play)": Sarah Ruhl’s Hit Broadway Comedy | Goldstar)

Nerves are in full force as I have less than a month to promote the hell out of this reading so I would LOVE it if you’d tell your Seattle friends. All free!! This is the last time I will be doing anything like this, save for London the following week, so I’d really love to pack Babeland and get some press and show everyone how awesome my books and my readers and contributors are. Thank you!! Yes, there are free gay cupcakes. And salted caramel. Because that’s how I roll. This links to Facebook where it’s super easy to let people know. And Seattle media, I hope our books/press releases find the right people. Thank you, universe.
